So, to answer the perennial question of, "Elonka, what do you want for a present?":  Your hostess throws modesty and humility to the wind, embraces her inner greed, and offers her suggestions. ;)

Things I like:  Games and puzzles!  Yes, I'm a grown-up, but I still like toys that I can sit and play with on Christmas morning.   :)

As far as books, I've got a huge stack of books that I haven't had a chance to read yet, but I still like getting books as presents.  I prefer non-fiction over fiction, and I especially like historical stuff, the older the better.  I also like biographies (especially auto-biographies) of respected leaders.  And comprehensive reference books, or sets of reference books, always make my eyes light up.

Books in those genres on tape or CD are also excellent, since I can listen to them while I'm driving.  I'm especially looking now for CDs or cassettes that are "driving tours" of certain areas, so that you can listen to it as you drive through a certain state, and learn something about the area as you're driving through it.

Let's see, what else? I get a kick out of "nostalgia" games, like I've been idly looking for one of these CDs that has the complete set of the entire old Infocom line of computer games.

I'm also into Buddhism, and like stuff that deals with the Dalai Lama or any kind of meditation.

I love educational game software, especially anything dealing with medical or surgery simulations. And heck, any Carmen Sandiego title would be a good gift. ;)

If you're in the "price is no object" category (I can dream, can't I?), well, in terms of electronics stuff, I still need a digital camera, and a decent stereo.  I've also been looking to get a new digital piano for my office.

Let's see, what else?  Palm Pilot accessories are good, since I have a Palm IIIc that I take everywhere with me.  In terms of other consoles, I have a Nintendo Gameboy and Sony Playstation, so accessories or games for those would be cool. (But I don't have a Playstation 2 yet, hint hint),

Oh, and if you're worried that you might be giving me something that I already have?  Don't sweat it, I can probably always use another.  Home, office, car, travel: Extras are always appreciated.  :)

Lastly, for those on a budget?  A gift that I *love*, is something very simple...  Go to a thrift or toy store and buy a jigsaw puzzle.  Any subject is fine, especially landscapes.  Take the pieces *out* of the box, and give them to me in a separate bag.  That way I don't know what the picture of the puzzle is, and I have to discover it as I put the puzzle together.  I can go through a 1000-piece puzzle in a few days, so when I'm on a roll, I go through many many different puzzles over the course of a year.  I can never have too many jigsaw puzzles!

Have a great holiday season, and if you have any items that you want on *your* gift list, let me know!
